About Continenten.com
Continenten.com is a free, trilingual reference site about the seven continents of our planet. No subscription, no advertising, no registration — just reliable information, for everyone.
What will you find here?
Each page covers one continent in depth: location and geography, population figures, climate, wildlife, economy and culture. There are also topic pages on comparing continents, time zones, oceans and continental boundaries. All figures come from recognised international organisations — the full list is on the Sources page.
The site is available in Dutch, English and French. Each language version is a full translation, not an automatically generated copy. Switch languages using the language button in the top-right corner of every page.
Who is it for?
The site is primarily aimed at secondary school students working on a project or presentation about a world region. Teachers looking for reliable data are equally well served — the Teaching resources section has worksheets, blank maps and quiz questions that are free to use in the classroom. Curious adults wanting to know exactly how large Africa is, or how many time zones Asia covers, will find a quick answer here.
How is it built?
Continenten.com consists of static HTML files. There is no database, no server-side code and no JavaScript framework. The only interactive elements are the Leaflet maps, which load map tiles from OpenStreetMap servers. This makes the site fast, stable and inexpensive to host. More about privacy and the one external request is on the privacy page.
Population figures come from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2024 and are updated annually. Land areas and country data are based on the CIA World Factbook. The figures across all continent pages are mutually consistent: the totals match the sum of the parts. See the full list on Sources.
Editorial policy
Every fact carries a source reference. There is no paid content on this site and no affiliate links. Advertising is entirely absent. The aim is simple: make reliable, verifiable knowledge freely available to everyone curious about our world.
Errors or outdated figures can be reported via the contact page. Suggestions for new pages or teaching materials are welcome.
Site overview
The seven continents are at the heart of the site: the continents overview provides key figures at a glance. From there you can navigate to individual continent pages, to sub-pages on countries, climate and wildlife, and to the topic pages. The maps are interactive but purely decorative — all content is fully readable without JavaScript.
